The success story of Tata Steel is an inspiration for people looking to make a mark in their lives, not only for self-advancement but for progress of the society and the Country as well. From establishing the first steel company in India to materialising the largest ever acquisition by an Indian firm, we have a history of taking challenges head on and emerging stronger and more illustrious every time. This culture of relishing challenges, inculcated in the employees of Tata Steel finds expression in their passion towards work making it a vehicle to achieve the next level of success. Tata Steel takes pride in the fact that it has always treated obstacles as stepping-stones in its journey of growth.
Facing Challenges Since 1907
Established in 1907, the Tata Iron and Steel Company was born out of the vision of J.N Tata, an industrialist-visionary and patriot who foresaw India’s future as an industrialised power. Those who believed in his vision braved wild terrains, unimaginable danger and even risked their fortunes to build India’s first great steel works.
Long before India dreamt of industrial self-reliance, J.N Tata envisioned India’s industrial enterprise― its first steel plant. Long before the industrialised nations instituted worker friendly policies, that same enterprise instituted an eight-hour day for its workers. Long before the corporate world became familiar with the term ‘CSR’ the Indian Company chose to confer up to 14% of its profits to charity. All this makes Tata Steel, one of the most trusted names in India today where people always come first.
Committed to Create Success
From its inception till date, Tata Steel has traversed a long and uneven road to emerge as a steel producer of global repute. Taking setbacks in its stride, the journey of more than a hundred years has encompassed exceptional success coupled with the love and commitment of a loyal workforce at all times. With its takeover of the Anglo-Dutch giant Corus, it has become one of the top ten steel producers in the world. The sheer size and scale of its operations notwithstanding, being the only steel plant outside Japan to have won the coveted Deming award reinforces the spirit of excellence that Tata Steel stands for.
Creating a Congenial Environment
The contribution of Tata Steel in the areas of labour, welfare and legislation, education, health and arts is quite remarkable. The Company is all set to achieve the world benchmark of 0.4 LTIFR (lost time injury frequency rate) in the coming years. In the face of increasing global concern towards climate change and issues of environment protection, the Company has set itself the goal of achieving carbon dioxide emission levels as per the World Steel Association benchmark. The Company is committed to safe and timely completion of the Brownfield project of reaching 10 MTPA at its Jamshedpur works as also its Greenfield projects in Orissa and Chhattisgarh. While the Company operations constantly address environmental sustainability, its rural development activities have also focused on improving the green cover and better water management. Tata Steel has implemented a variety of control measures to improve the working environment at the shop floor. The objective has been to create an atmosphere that respects both nature and community at the same time.
