Tata Steel is on a continual and active lookout for young minds who have big dreams for themselves, the society around them and the country at large. We recruit young professionals from various streams of Engineering and Management. Apart from BE and MBA graduates, we also recruit M Techs / Ph Ds for our Research &Development and Technology groups, and graduates from specific institutes for areas like Corporate Communication, Social Work, Legal Services etc.

There are several ways in which you can be a part of Tata Steel:

The summer season in India is known for the unyielding gaze of the heavens with temperatures rising upto 50° C and sizzling hot winds in the afternoons which bustle their way into every home. Evenings bring forth clear and soothing skies albeit too flittingly before one is ready to brave another day of tussle between Mercury and gravity.

Schools and colleges declare truce with the climate Gods and announce holidays in this trying period of Indian climes. It is in this setting when the summer sets in with its usual severity that Tata Steel invites bright young and sunny minds from various premier institutes to its plants and offices across the country. These youngsters are fondly referred to as ‘Summer Interns’.

At an average over hundred students from engineering and management institutes who are about to progress to their final year of study are selected for summer internship by a combination of written tests, group discussions and personal interviews.

Some of the institutes we visit for selection of Summer Interns are as follows:

  • IIT Kharagpur, Kanpur, Roorkee, Madras, Bombay
  • IT BHU, ISMU Dhanbad
  • BESU Shibpur, Jadavpur Univeristy
  • BIT Mesra, College of Engineering Pune
  • NIT Jamshedpur, Rourkela
  • XLRI , XIM BBSR, XISS
  • IIM Calcutta
  • IIFT Delhi
  • MDI Gurgaon
  • TISS, FMS

What happens during the Summer Internship Program

As an intern you stay and work with us for a period of 6 – 10 weeks. You are entitled to a monthly stipend, reimbursement of your travel expenditure, accommodation and daily transport facility; and most importantly, with a dedicated project and project guide, you get to work on a ‘live’ problem which would present an opportunity to learn and contribute at the same time. Each of these projects are carefully selected from amongst the focus areas / teething problems as identified in the ABP (annual business plan) of the organization. Above all, you make new friends, forge new relationships, get to observe a large corporation from close quarters and have an inside view of the Tata Steel family.

During the internship Programme, we encourage you to organize and participate in various events like debates, quizzes, drama, treks, mini – marathon etc. To expose you to various facets of Tata Steel, we organize sessions where you get to meet our senior executives from functions like Marketing, CSR, R&D and Technology, Human Resources, Strategy etc.

Why the focus on Summer Internship Program

Apart from the monetary expenditure, the organization invests considerable resources in terms of time of its executives for the summer internship Programme. So why do we embark on this journey with you? Well, as an organization, we would like to select our future managers with great care because you are central to our growth and globalization story which is unfolding fast; and we feel that the hurry imposed by placement processes at various campuses do not allow us to do the same. The two months that you spend with us gives us a fair insight in you as a person and as a professional. At the same time, you are ‘embedded’ in the organization during the project period and get to observe us from close quarters, making your decision about your future employer a considered one.

Evaluation Process

Each project has certain deliverables. We have a mid- term review at the end of 4 weeks and a final presentation at the end of the project to discuss your work. You would also be taken through a day long mutual appreciation Programme where we would attempt to understand your dreams and ambitions and get to know you better as an individual. We look for a combination of technical acumen, passion and innovativeness, grit and perseverance and of-course, a clear ‘fit’ with our culture.

Pre Placement Offer (PPO)

We have a strong PPO policy. In the group of Management Trainees who will join us in 2011, approximately 80% have been selected through the PPO route after the end of Summer Internship 2010.

Within two weeks of the completion of the project, we announce the PPOs and would expect you to decide upon acceptance or otherwise of our offer within another fortnight. Those who accept the PPOs are accorded a monthly stipend in the final year of their study.

The Tata Steel Management Trainee Programme continues to attract and offer exciting career options to young engineers who are from amongst the best colleges of the country. To ensure a steady pool of technically competent Engineers and Business Managers for the future, Tata Steel’s management trainee Programmeme has recruited a large number of trainees from Premier institutes across India.

Students who accept the Pre-Placement Offers and join Tata Steel after the completion of their respective courses at their institutions also join Tata Steel as Management Trainees.

A one-year development Programmeme is part of the induction process before a new recruit can accept independent responsibilities in different businesses. The focus in recent times has been on Pre-Placement Offers (PPO) in Campuses.
